    Mauritius has a population of over 1.2 million people with its major area of activities concentrated within
    the capital, Port-Louis. The Southern road facilities leading towards this district are the Motorway (M1)
    and the Port- Louis-St Jean Road (A1) while those from the Northern parts are the Motorway (M2) and the
    Port Louis Central Flacq Road (A2). This limitation in accessibility creates severe morning and afternoon
    traffic congestion which is estimated to cost the Mauritian economy around Rs 2 billion annually.

    As of June 2011, 392,276 vehicles are registered on the island. 46% of this fleet consists of cars and dual-
    purpose vehicles and 41% of motorized two-wheelers. The remaining 13% consists of vans, lorries and
    trucks, buses and other vehicles.
