Causes
Fleetwood Nautical Campus
Caused by a combination of several
environmental factors, including;
Air Temperature
Water Temperature
Freezing Temperature of Water
Wind Speed
Wind Direction, Relative to the Ship
Wave Characteristics
Wave Size
Wave Length
Wave Propagation Direction
SEA SPRAY ICING
Fleetwood Nautical Campus
Freezing Spray or Seawater
Air temperature & hence the decks &
superstructure are below the freezing point of
seawater.
Seawater freezes quickly on to masts, rigging,
superstructure & decks of vessel.
Effect is enhanced by increases in wind speed &
decreases in sea temperature & also by snow &
rainfall.

As weight is being added to points well above
the Centre of Gravity of the ship, then
instability may result the vessel may capsize.
The breaking strain of rigging components
may be exceeded & they may fail as a
consequence.
Possible Problems

Severity of Ice Accretion
Fleetwood Nautical Campus
Actions to Avoid Ice Accretion
Try chipping away the ice as a first-aid
measure- good for morale!
Try applying salt & commercial de-icing
compounds.
Some vessels have external heaters fitted.
Alter course/speed to reduce spraying & water
on deck.
Seek shelter to leeward of an island.
Head for a warmer climate.
