Confucius's most outstanding student, once asked his master to describe the rule

s of Rn and Confucius replied, "One should see nothing improper, hear nothing imp
roper, say nothing improper, do nothing improper."[1] Confucius also defined Rn i
n the following way: "wishing to be established himself, seeks also to establish
others; wishing to be enlarged himself, he seeks also to enlarge others."[2] An
other meaning of Rn is "not to do to others as you would not wish done to yoursel
f."[3] Confucius also said, "Rn is not far off; he who seeks it has already found
it." Rn is close to man and never leaves him.[4]
For Confucius relationships between people should be built on sincerity and kind
ness. People should not wait for reciprocity from people. Everything they do has
to come out form heart and with the best intentions.
One of the cores of Confucius teaching is a Ren concept, which means benevolence
or a goodness. Ren concept can be represented by a Golden Rule of Confucius: Dont
do to others what you would not like them to do to you. For Confucius relationsh
ips between people should be built on sincerity and kindness. People should not
wait for reciprocity from people. Everything they do has to come out form heart
and with the best intentions.
It is the golden rule that governs the basis of many codes of conduct throughout
history. Each of us would like others to recognize and respect OUR individuality
as they treat us kindly, compassionately, fairly, humanely, lovingly, politely
and respectfully, so we are to go out of our way to treat OTHERS with this same
consideration, recognizing what their individual needs are. This is not always e
asy to do, as it takes more effort to try and understand where other people are
coming from, but showing this insight can have a profound effect to others.
