Whereas, The South End neighborhood of Springfield, Massachusetts, has historically been a destination and
home to thousands of Italian-Americans; people who by virtue of industry, creativity, spirit and faith have made,
and continue to mae, our community a strong and vibrant place; and
Whereas, Italians and Italian-Americans have made great contributions to America!s society; economically,
culturally, and politically" Their dedication, loyalty and commitment to the #ity of Springfield inspires Italian-
Americans and the entire community; and
Whereas, Italian-Americans have toiled and labored while helping to build our $ation!s infrastructure, including
railroads, tunnels, highways, and subways; and
Whereas, The month of %ctober is a time to honor Italian &eritage and the many contributions Italians have
made to our community and our nation" Italian-Americans have won prestigious pri'es, such as the $obel (ri'e,
the (rit'er Award for architecture, and the )ields Medal for mathematics"
