THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL

Theta State Lambda Chapter

Lambda Chapter met October 6, 2014, at Linda Luker's home in Lovington. Members enjoyed a meal
of beef stew, sandwiches, chips and salsa, followed by lemon cake.

Rosa Doporto, guest speaker and assistant director of the Lea County Museum in Lovington
described the various exhibits displayed at the museum. Tuesday through Saturday from 9 to 5 are
the hours, and admission is free. Residents and travelers alike would learn much from touring the
many rooms and outside buildings of the museum.

In 1969 the Lovington Women's Club, eager to preserve our history, turned an old hotel into the
present day Lea County Museum. Hotels had occupied the building since 1918.

Today, many rooms declare an interesting panorama of our past, such as the Pioneer Room, the
Dessie Sawyer room of beautiful gowns that she wore to Democratic conventions and mingled with
famous politicians including President John F. Kennedy.

Veterans are honored in a room for those who served in wars and in times of peace. Monument, NM,
is planning a room and also Dorothy Runnels will have a room to showcase the Runnels.

The Town Hall meeting room is used frequently. Wall of Fame for Sports, Oil and Gas Exhibit, and Art
Gallery, are a few of the rooms. A medical Room is planned. Dr. Botts of Hobbs is donating
supplies.

Outside the museum is the Little Village which consists of old buildings that have been moved to the
museum. The post office , Caprock Store (1910), Baker's School, "Love" home, an outhouse, and a
dugout can all be toured.

Jim Harris, director of the Lea County Museum, has also acquired the Lister building and
Beverly's. Much has been done with the museum, and we can look forward to much more.

President Anne Chaffin called the meeting to order. Oct. 18 will be Early Educators Day at Hobbs
High School at 8:30 A.M. Pat Graff of Albuquerque will lead the program. Lambda will supply paper
goods, cookies, nuts, cheese, and bananas.

The grant-in-aid application was recommended for Maribel Martinez's daughter, a student at
NMJC. Linda Cauthen made a motion to present the application to the scholarship committee. Linda
Luker seconded the motion.

Maribel will join Anne in distributing bookmarks with candy bars attached to attract new members to
DKG.

Linda Cauthen will ask Trish Stephenson of the Lovington Technology Department to send emails to
the schools to publicize the Oct. 18meeting for early educators.

Lambda Chapter's November 3, 2014, meeting will be at Rancher's Steakhouse in Hobbs at 5:30
P.M. Remember to bring additions for the food basket we will donate.

Meeting adjourned.
