Initial Hypothesis
Dixiecrats were alarmed by the narrowing
social gap between blacks and whites
As white Supremacists, equality between
blacks and whites was undesirable

use different:
schools
bathrooms
water fountains
restaurants
etc
Changes in Presidential Policy
President Harry S.
Truman supported
Civil Rights laws,
pushing for fairness
and equality for all
before the law
Trumans Political Opposition
President Truman proposed
multiple civil rights laws that
pushed for equality, but all were
rejected by Congress
Southern Democrats felt they were
not being properly represented by
Truman, and founded their own
faction of the Democratic Party,
the Dixiecrats
