Rome
Basic Information
-Inhabited as early as 1000 BCE
-Ruled by 7 kings
-The centers of political power were the two consuls and the senate
-The Senate made the laws for rome
-Society was hierarchal
-Families and Individuals were tied to patron/client relationships
-Roman women had more freeedom than greek women
-Worshiped supernatural spirits
Expansion
-Rome began to expand in the 3rd and 2nd centuries
-Rome conquered Italy by 390 BCE
-Rome defeated Carthage for the western mediterranean, siciliy, sardinia
and Spain.

Failure of the Republic
-Independent farming families were forced to be in the military
-Decline in Soldiers
-Decline in Food Production
- Armies chose emperors
-The traditional source of soldiers was lost, so Romans had to use the
Underclass for soldiers. This ultimately led to civil wars, and generals taking
control of the government in Rome
Urban empire
-80% of the population of Rome were rural farmers
-The empire was administered through a network of cities and towns
-The upper class lived in well built places, the poor lived in dark wooden
Tenements
-Rural people had little contact with the representation of the gov't
-Manufacture and trade flourished under the pax-romana
-Romanization had a great effect in urbanization
-This was as urban as it got, it really wasn't evolved like us but it was a great
step.
