Using Standalone VMWare Converter

Converting P2V and V2V














Task to convert a VM running on older S01809D server to new S00977D VC. It would be a V2V
conversion.
Steps
1. Open vmware Standalone converter from 00977D servers desktop shortcut.

2. Click on Convert Machine, and then give the source machines parent ESX servers login
details.

3. As soon as you login on the above step, it would list out all the VMs running on that ESX server.
Choose the one you want to migrate in our case its S02079D.
When you click on the VM, you wont be able to proceed as Next button is disabled that is
because of the fact that the machine is running right now first well have to power down the
VM in order to migrate.








4. After the VM has been powered OFF, repeat the above steps again, and this time the converter
will try to grab all the VM details.

5. Give the Destination VCENTER details use your FTID for login -

6. From the hierarchy, choose the folder where you want this VM to be placed. Ideally this
location will be handed over to you by requestor of the machine migration.

7. Choose the Cluster/ESX Server & Datastore to use in this window make sure your VM will fit
the datastore you are selecting.

8. You can modify the post migration options if you want like installing VMware tools if required,
else just press Next, check the summary page, and click on Finish to start the conversion.


9. The progress of conversion can be seen on the main converter window.


10. Do the following post migration checks when migration completed
a. Network Configuration
b. Vmware tools upgrade if required
c. Rename the machine on OLD VC to say Do NOT Power ON
( On an average 60GB machine would take approx. 2 hours for whole maintenance window )
