IONIC BOND

An ion is an atom which is not neutral. It has excess of charge on it. There are two
types of ions, Cation and Anion. Cation who have positive charge. They are formed when
loses electrons and protons exceed their number.Anion who have negative charge. They are
formed when an atom gains electrons or molecules. All non-metals form negatively charged
ions but all metals form positively charged cations. The composition of ionic bonds are
determined by the requirenment that the bonds must be electrically neutral. The charges
between cation and aion must balance. Ionic bonds are formed by the transfer of one or
more valence electrons between atoms typically between metals and non-metals. The
transfer of electrons allows the atoms to effectively achieve much more stable electron
configuration of the noble gases. The molecular formula for ionic bond can be determined
bby satisfying two condition. First, the charge of constituent can be determined based on
the transfer of valence electrons necessary in order to satisfy octet rule. Second, the cation
and anion are combined in ratio that produces electrically neutral product compound. For
example, in the reaction of calcium and chlorine, the product compound is called calcium
chloride. It is composed of Ca
2+
cation and Cl
-
anion, as those charges produce filled valence
shells. Finally it is molecular formula written as CaCl
2
, the neutral combination of this ions.
