BACKGROUND - CALVIN
Calvin Agreed with Luthers beliefs

Born in France. Studied Theology. What is Theology?????

Converted to Lutheranism(Protestantism) in 1533.

He converted in Catholic France. He had to flee to Basle, Switzerland. Why
did he have to flee??????

Calvin wrote The Institutes of the Christian Religion outlining his main
beliefs. Set up his own religion. Became known as Calvinists or
Presbyterians.
REFORMATION
CALVINS MAIN BELIEFS
-Bible the only authority.

-Ministers (presbyters) elected by the congregation.

-No Bishops in the Calvinist Church.

-No decoration in the church.

-God knows who are going to heaven. People are called the elect. This
belief is known as PREDESTINATION.
CALVIN CHURCH
CALVIN'S GENEVA

Calvin asked to setup a church and lead the Reformation in the city.

Calvin had complete control over the workings of the city.

Setup administration with four main group of orders:
-Presbyters
-Teacher
-Elders
-Deacons
GROUPS OF ORDERS UNDER CALVINS RULE

Teachers???????????

Elders looked after the welfare of the congregation

Deacons Looked after the sick and poor.
BRUTAL REPRESSION OF HERETICS
CALVIN
Calvin was the cruel and the unopposed dictator of Geneva.

Calvin knew how to manipulate relationships, intimidate, bully, and
humiliate.

Michael Servetus was a theologian who taught doctrines contrary to the
historic Christian faith in Geneva, the city where Calvin ministered. He
was arrested in August 1553 for denying the Trinity and that Christ was
the eternal Son of God. He was executed two months later when he was
burned at the stake.

People were often executed in Calvins day to maintain public order, and
heresy was a capital offense. Because of the inherent connection
between church and state, anyone who disturbed the peace could be
branded as a revolutionary who may do harm to the common good.
GENEVA CITIZENS
-All positions elected by the congregation

-Geneva strict laws no gambling, dancing, theatres, silliness

-Sunday was the Sabbath day of rest

-Everyone expected to go to Church sever punishments for breaking
rules

Pope Leo X was so happy with Henry, that he gave him the title Fidei
Defensor (Defender of the Faith).

Henry married Catherine of Aragon, the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella
of Spain. Who were they??????????????

Catherine of Aragon was the widow to Henrys brother, Arthur.
ANNULMENT????????????
Henry applied to Pope Clement VII for an annulment. Catherine of Aragon
was his sister in law and thus the marriage should have never been
allowed.

By accepting the annulment, the Catholic Church was admitting to being
wrong. Clement refused to annul Henrys marriage.

What did Henry do next???????????????????
HENRY VIII
Henry divorced Catherine, and married Anne Boleyn.

Henrys marriage was not recognised by the Pope. What actions did the
Church take against Henry???????????????

RESULTS OF THE REFORMATION

Reformation the Church governed politics; it
controlled emperors and kings and governed the
law of lands.

Example of change = Act of Supremacy. What is that

TRUTH
The concept that the Pope and
Catholic hierarchy did not have a
monopoly on truth, but each person
could ascertain the truth through a
personal relationship with God.
IN THE VERNACULAR
Martin Luther's translation of the bible.

Enabled the common person to read the
bible

NEW RELIGIONS

Lutheranism, Calvinism, Baptism,

and many other new Christian religions.
CONFLICT
An immediate and unfortunate effect of the
Reformation was intolerance, which
expressed itself in persecution and
religious wars.
