Assignment IV

ELECTRICAL MACHINES (EIC 602)

(Due Date on or before 22/4/14)
1. Explain the principle of operation of an induction motor with the help of
suitable sketches.
2. The voltage applied to the stator of a three phase 4- pole induction motor has
a frequency of 50 Hz. The frequency of the EMF induced in the rotor is 2.5
Hz. Calculate the slip and speed at which motor is running.
3. Discuss briefly the various methods of speed control of 3-phase Induction
motor.
4. Describe with diagram, the working of star delta starter.
5. Describe with neat sketches the construction of a 3-phase cage type
induction motor.
6. What do you understand by slip? Whether an induction motor can run at
synchronous speed?
7. Why starters are necessary for starting 3-phase induction motors? Name
different starting methods and explain working of Direct on Line and auto
transformer starters with the help of neat diagrams.
8. Derive the equation for torque developed by a 3- phase induction motor.
Draw a typical torque slip characteristics.
9. A 4 pole 50 Hz 3-phase induction motor has a rotor resistance 0.02 ohm per
phase and standstill reactance of 0.5 ohm per phase. Determine the speed at
which the maximum torque will develop.
10. Describe with neat sketches the construction of a 3-phase wound type
induction motor.
11. Deduce an expression for the frequency of rotor current in an induction
motor.
12. Two three phase induction motors when connected across 400 volts 50 Hz
supply and running at 1440 and 940 RPM respectively. Determine which of
the motor is running at higher slip and justify your answer.
