Foreword of LUCEM
Dear Sir or Madam,
Dear architect,
Dear building owner,
We are glad that you are dealing with our planning details and worth
knowing characteristics about LUCEM light transmitting concrete.
Herein, we will present the rst edition of our planning details, based
on our four-year-old company history, as well as on requests of ar-
chitects and designers.
We have tried hard to combine all our knowledge about the applica-
tion of LUCEM with a practical orientation.
These planning details may contain a lot of passages worthy of im-
provement and may not imply all applicabilities of LUCEM light
transmitting concrete.
Therefore, we would be pleased about critical feedback on our
planning details.
We are planning a revision of these planning details by end of 2011,
taking up all constructive suggestions that are helping along to im-
prove our planning details.
On request, every supporter can be mentioned by name in this
foreword.
Moreover, the second edition will contain an additive chapter pre-
senting our nished references that are arising as a result of the fair
BAU 2011.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Company
LUCEM Ltd.
LUCEM Ltd., located in Stolberg near Aachen, is specialised on the
fabrication of products consisting of light transmitting concrete that
can be applied in various elds in architecture and interior design.
Products of translucent concrete will be applied to design interiors
or facades in a sustainable and aesthetical way.
At the moment, LUCEM (15 employees) is producing only in Ger-
many with expansionary force and special production techniques
that LUCEM is owning exclusively.
Constant specialisation and exible production techniques allow
LUCEM to be a reliable national and international partner for buil-
ding projects.
An innovative technique of production forms the headstone of the
LUCEM technology which Andreas Roye and Marijan Barl develo-
ped within the years 2007-2009.
Established in april 2007 as robatex (Roye Barl Textiles), the fabri-
cation of light transmitting concrete was developed systematically
and a production line was built up.
Since 2007, all developed products already were distributed world-
wide as the trademark LUCEM. The renaming of the company na-
me robatex to LUCEM succeeded in october 2010 to guarantee a
uniform outer appearance.

Company
LUCEM Ltd.
LUCEM products are respected and demanded as innovations and
high-quality workmanship made in Germany on the worldwide
market. They are esteemed by architects, designers and interior
desginers, further by investors and private clients. Not for nothing,
LUCEM was exhibiting in the German pavilion on the worldwide fair
Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
The trademark LUCEM combines high-class quality and timeless
aesthetic: high-grade concretes and translucent bres that are du-
rable and solid: weatherproofed and UV-resistant, abrasion-proofed
and non-ammable.
The aestehtic of a translucent appearance combined with a massive
and stable material catches the eye.
Sleek, glossy or silk-matt surfaces are forming an outstanding cha-
racteristic of LUCEM. These surfaces can be designed individually
with extras, e.g. colour pigments or different arrangements of bres.
LUCEM is producing panels in untrimmed sizes that can be proces-
sed and used similiar to natural stone.
LUCEM supports all designers or architects involved in the building
project to choose the best mounting and lighting system and
furthermore gives advice for ways of application of the LUCEM pro-
duct diversity.
Nearly every service, e.g. planning, processing or construction is
available in the LUCEM network and appropriate business contacts
can be procured.

Concrete
Light transmitting concrete
The point: a mathematical element without dimension. However,
if the origin is a beam of light totally internally reected through an
optical ber encapsulated in concrete then in plurality a notable
transparency results and a new dimension of this fundamental
material arises: LUCEM Lichtbeton.
Water, sand and cement form concrete ultra-ne optical bers
break through the concrete mass punctually whilst mechanical
and haptical characteristics remain untouched.
The transmitting optical bers get parallelised and then layer by
layer embedded in the concrete. Thus, a large formatted con-
crete is realised as the basis for cutting the panels.
The surfaces of these panels are polished to reveal the ne
smoothness which enables LUCEM to become a creative work of
art.

Lighting wire - theoretical
Functional principle
Diffuse natural light and sun light provide the full spectrum of co-
lors shining through the LUCEM panels.
Sunlight is the most inexpensive light source.
If LUCEM is mounted free standig or in front of a window, one will
not need any articial light source.
Please notice that brightly illuminated rooms may vary contrasting
effects of LUCEM.
Due to the way of mounting, articial light sources may effect ste-
ady colours or fascinating effects and give new desgin opportuni-
ties to architects.
Mounted as a wall or oor panel, LUCEM light transmitting con-
crete needs to be lighted with articial light sources. These light
sources guarantee an illumination of the whole backside of the
panel.
Indirect light gives a special effect to rooms, especially if LUCEM
panels are the single light source. Due to special optics of bres,
the wall panel varies in colours from every point of view inside the
room.

LUCEM Line
Due to a ne-meshed structure consisting of light transmitting -
bers, the impression of a lightweight structure which in conjunc-
tion with illumination elegantly reveals silouted objetcs.
During processing of LUCEM LINE, a highly-uid cement with
specic granular size joins ne-meshed bres. Due to this proces-
sing, a consistent surface arises, with thousands of translucent
bres breaking through.
Light and shadow are shining through LUCEM LINE perfectly.
The human eye is able to complete the missing points automati-
cally so that it seems as if one could see the whole hand.
LUCEM LINE often is installed as a decorative wall panel due to
his liveliness in bres, appearing almost like a work of art.

LUCEM Starlight
If bres with different diameters are used in irregular distances in
between each, the single light points appear brighter forming a
punctual transparency like the impression of a starlit night.
The concrete material disappears into the background.
If bres with bigger diameters are used, the single light spots ap-
pear brighter. A local brilliancy arises the impression of a very
bright surface although less than 1 % of the surface is consisting
of light spots.

LUCEM Label
If required, the light transmitting bres can be arranged in logos,
names or icons a guarantee for an individual and distinctive ap-
pearance.
Unique prints can be produced, which can be delivered as single-
piece production, as small or big series. Entrance or guidance
signs but also functional facades can be designed.

Colour variations / Textures
LUCEM light transmitting concrete is a mixture of ne concrete
and optical bres. These optical bres are responsible for the
lighted surface - the shininess.
Nevertheless, the arrangement of ne concrete has a strong in-
uence on the appearance of the stones.
The texture of a stone is the only visual feature if no light is brea-
king through the concrete.
Combined with translucent bres the structure of the concrete is
responsible for the outer appearance of LUCEM light transmitting
concrete.
Concrete consists of a mixture of cement, pigments and sands.
The production of LUCEM light transmitting concrete always is
based on white cement and therefore can be delivered also in
white colour.
The colours grey and anthracite are coloured with pigments of
ferric oxids.
Thanks to longtime experiences, LUCEM offers three colours
which are reproducible. Beside the pigment colouring of the whi-
te cement, concrete is mixed with 50 % sand.
At the moment, LUCEM Ltd. offers the following concrete mixtu-
res:
Ulmer White, 3 mm grain
Grey calcilith, 3 mm grain
Anthracite calcilith, 3 mm grain
Please keep in mind that LUCEM light transmitting concrete is
true concrete. Small colour differences and irregularities can not
always be avoided. Air voids also appear in light transmitting
concrete and may have a size of 2mm diameter on the surface.
The design of LUCEM LINE appears like a horizontal layering
whilst LUCEM STARLIGHT appears like terrazzo.

LUCEM light panels
Use
Mounted as a wall or oor panel, LUCEM light transmitting con-
crete needs to be lighted with articial light sources. These light
sources guarantee an illumination of the whole backside of the
panel.
Product
LUCEM light panels are small plates that get lighted laterally
with high efcient but energy-saving LEDs. The light panels are
4-10 mm thin and available in different colours.
The use of RGB-LEDs allows state colours or colour changes
from time to time.
Single elements can be interconnected and as a whole system
dimmed in brightness.
In contrast to other deeper systems, the lighting occurs laterally
- depending on the size of the panel and the requested lumino-
sity - LEDs can be installed on one, two or on every side.
LUCEM light panels are marked with an individual raster or la-
minated with prism lm to guarantee a homogenous spread of
light.
Safety
The use of low voltage (12 V) increases safety and makes addi-
tional protection classes up to IP67 possible.
Efciency and sustainability
LEDs are said to be very efcient concerning effects and light
yield. The LED life span counts 80.000 hours and reduces the
regular exchange of light sources.
Cutting
Besides the standard size of 1,2m x 0,60 m, cuttings and re-
cesses in various forms can be produced precisely.

Roomconcept, color design, materiality and art: those were the
main subjects, Sassan Philip Haschemi & Associates worked on,
picking LUCEM LINE panels as a special highlight: LUCEM light
transmitting concrete panels for the entrance hall and the excecu-
tive suite. The LUCEM LINE panels have been designed as oor
to ceiling wall claddings utilising free space behind the panels for
light supply. The special color of the light source was made con-
sistent with the colors of the interior design by using a LED source
with warm-white light.
LUCEM gave us the opportunity to provide creative accents,
which harmonise with the entire interior design and the art-
work concept, says Sassan Philipp Haschemi.
LUCEM panels have been installed nearly without gaps. Thus, the
inner structure of the panels seems to glow from inside itself. Due
to the ease of processing, all operating elements and displays
have been integrated completely planar to the surface.
All in all, 9 lightpanels in special frameworks with the size of 1,2 x
3,5 m were installed to accompany the elevators across three
superposed oors.

Planning and implementation:
LUCEM Ltd.
A private building owner was looking for a special eyecatcher to de-
sign his entry area in his large-scaled residential house.
To integrate this highlight as harmonical as possible, a LUCEM
LINE surface with the size of 0,5 x 2,0 m was embedded into the
wall.
Mounting was progressed with visible screws to stress the material
speciality of the panels but not affecting the troweled surface of the
wall.
The special at light system allowed a minimal installation depth
suitable for the light transmitting concrete panels.
On the part of the building site, only a low voltage power supply line
was needed. The AC adaptor was installed conform to be connec-
ted with the central power supply line.
Due to this, mounting could be realised within four hours.
Being unlighted over the day, this surface appears as a high-class
concrete material with a sanded terrazzo surface; in the evening
and during dawn this decent light source changes into a light source
with numerous light spots lighting the room.

Idea
Implementation
The relief of the wall strengthens the shadow and light play and shows the
whole impressive effectiveness of LUCEM: perfect lighting wire without af-
fecting the thickness of the panels as well as the remained stability of the
concrete.
Therefore, a concept was developed that encloses the whole design in a
raster consisting of standard-sized LUCEM light transmitting concrete pa-
nels and continuing into all dimensions.
The booth at the fair BAU 2011 was built to present light transmitting con-
crete on the one hand as a product with variety of opportunities but on the
other hand as a uniform design.
Details
On a surface of 5 x 7 m and a height of up to 5 m, all products were instal-
led in a high-class architectural context.
On the ground, an illuminated and walkable surface in different formats
caught the spectators" interest.
The wall, structured like a relief, was mounted with anchors upon a light
aluminium framework.

Mounting

Mounting
The mounting of LUCEM panels is similiar to processing, stability
and tolerances of natural stones.
Cuttings and mounting holes shall be processed in a wet way, but
dry processing is also possible in well aerated rooms only to per-
form small changes for mounting at the building site.
In general, the same safety instructions as for granite processing
are valid for LUCEM.
During mounting of LUCEM, the light source should always be kept
in mind because of the translucent material. Mounted free standing
and lighted with day light, all mechanical elements are visible
through LUCEM.
Please mount LUCEM with least shadows so that a big and shiny
surface can arise.
To guarantee a shiny surface, metal frameworks can be used for
free standing constructions. Mounted prexed, facade anchors can
be used. Floor constructions can be mounted at upon different
suboors. It is always necessary to adapt the lighting system to the
way of mounting.
LUCEM is almost always equipped with a at LED lighting system to
allow a slight installation depth.
During mounting, LUCEM should only be handled with dry and
clean hands. Remnants of oil or fat can hardly be removed.
LUCEM light transmitting concrete can be mounted in different ways.
Basically, all ways of xing like in xing of natural stones can be ta-
ken over for LUCEM but the lighting system needs to be considered.
Please nd examples of three ways of mounting - screwing, under-
cut anchors, Halfen xing system - in the following:

Maintenance instructions
Cleaning / Hydrophobic effect
Nearly like every product, LUCEM envinces signs of usage.
Please stick to the following maintenance instructions to guarantee
that LUCEM will be as shiny as on the day of mounting.
Factory-made protection
LUCEM is delivered with a water resistant impregnation (hydropho-
bic effect) so that the surfaces are protected against slight soilings.
Although, concrete is a water absorbent material. Please always
remove liquids with colour pigments of LUCEM panels immediately.
For cleaning, a sponge or a cloth should be used.
Our light transmitting panels in addition are protected with a foil.
The surfaces of the light transmitting concrete are protected against
soilings during processing of the elements.
After processing and mounting, the protecting foil can be removed
by lifting up its edges carefully with a knife.
Refreshing of hydrophobic effect
The hydrophobic effect may decrease depending on usage and in-
tensity of cleaning. Therefore, a refreshing of the hydrophobic effect
is suggested and is always possible.
We suggest to use standard hydrophobic mediums for concrete.
Before refreshing the hydrophobic effect, please pay attention to the
safety instructions of the fabricator.
Cleaning
We suggest to use pH-neutral and non-abrasive detergents or natu-
ral stone detergents for cleaning. Please never use acids, e.g. vine-
gar, benzine, turpentine, acetone, antiseptics containing phosphoric
acid or alkalinous products for cleaning because they may attack
concrete surfaces.
