dlscharged, even lf Lhe person dlscharglng Lhe weapon ls noL an offlcer.

lour decades of annual analyses have alLered Lhe way offlcers respond Lo, engage ln, and assess Lhe need for
flrearms dlscharges. lnformaLlon gleaned from Lhe annual reporLs has saved llves, and Lhere has been ueparLmenL-wlde
change wlLh regard Lo flrearms safeLy, reLenLlon, and LacLlcs. 1he ueparLmenL has made resLralnL Lhe norm. When
annual recordkeeplng began ln 1971, 12 offlcers were shoL and kllled by anoLher person, and 47 offlcers were shoL and
ln[ured. Cfflcers, ln Lurn, shoL and kllled 93 sub[ecLs, and ln[ured anoLher 221. 8y conLrasL, ln 2012, 13 offlcers were shoL
and ln[ured by sub[ecLs, whlle pollce shoL and kllled 16 sub[ecLs, and ln[ured 14 oLhers, no offlcer was kllled by sub[ecL
gunflre ln 2012.
