Who are The Things? What do we stand for?
The Things are a FIRST Tech Challenge team based in Elk River, MN and where founded as a FIRST Lego League team in 2007. We are a 4H team that is made up of 6 youth members. We not only competed in the MN State FTC competition, but we also served over 2200 community ser- vices hours last year at events including hosting FLL tourna- ments, teaching robotics and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) camps, hosting informational sessions on robotics, and coaching and mentoring FIRST Lego League teams. Our team received the Connect award last year at the Minnesota State Tournament because of our extensive com- munity footprint. Getting other youth interested in science and engineering is very important to our team. It is also vital to the advancement of the US society because we are currently in need of more engineers and scientist. That is why we need your help in supporting the robotics program. 2014-2015 The Things Values Teach other youth about robotics. Always promote FIRST Robotics & Spon- sors in a positive manner. Influence others to consider a Science and Technology career. Have FUN! What is FTC?
FTC is a robotics program designed for students in grades 7-12 to compete head to head, using a sports model competition. Teams are responsible for designing, building, and programming their ro- bots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The ro- bot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors and vol- unteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as for well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.
The Things Brand- The Things are a very well known team because of our energy, en- thusiasm, and gracious professionalism. At tournaments & other events, we wear our signature red Things t-shirts and blue hair. We are known by many FTC teams in Minnesota, as well as have a huge impact on FIRST Lego League teams because of our com- munity service to the program & our previous enrollment in the pro- gram. By sponsoring our team, you are attaching your brand to our teams brand in the FIRST community. By sponsoring us, we pro- vide a means for you to show that you care about the community and you can also get future engineers interested in careers at your company. What Are We Look- ing For? This years challenge for FTC is called Cascade Ef- fect. The robot must be able to scoop up two different sized whiffle balls and place them in rolling tubes with varying heights. In the last 30 seconds of the game our robot can score extra points by scoring whiffle balls in the tube with a height of 4ft or move the rolling goals onto a ramp. The robot will cost thousands of dollars, which is why we need your help. We are looking for sponsors for either financial backing, or parts and ser- vices.
"We are in a race be- tween knowledge and catas- trophe. If we keep track of what is im- portant, never lower our stand- ards or for- get why we are here, we have the ability to deter- mine the fate of the world." -Dean Kamen
How Does This Benefit Your Company?
Our robot will be seen at multiple regional tournaments, as well as the Minnesota State competition and possibly the Iowa Super Re- gional if our team gets a chance to compete in this tournament. Our robot will also compete in pre-tournament scrimmages. At each tournament, 20-30 teams (even higher at the Super Region- al and Worlds) will be competing, with 7-15 members on each team. They will also be accompanied by coaches and family, as well as the general public. This means that at each tournament as many as a thousand people or more will be impacted by our robot with your logo on it. Your logo will also be seen by hundreds of other people at FLL events. This is a great advertising opportunity for your company for a couple of reasons. It shows that your com- pany cares about the engineering community and also gets your companys name out to parents and judges , as well as future customers (the students). It also gets students interested in your company; this will get the next wave of engineers interested in careers at your company.
