Yellow Fever

Gary Luo

What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is like yellow jack or yellow plague. It infects 200,000 people and causes
30,000 deaths every year, but 90% of these situations are occurring in Africa. They are
commonly found in tropical places.

Where does it come from, how do you get it?

Yellow Fever is from female mosquitos. When they suck your blood, they will spread a virus
into your body. The virus will infect cells such as Monocytes, a type of white blood cell,
Macrophages, another type of white blood cell and dendritic cells, which is a Langerhans
cell that can infect the tissue. All of those cells will attach to one big cell surface via
specificreceptors, which then, will go to your endosomal vesicle. Decreasing the pH inside
the endosome, it will induce the fusion of the endosomal membrane with the Yellow Fever
virus increasing. 1

How do you know you have it?

You will get a fever, chills, loss of appetite, nausea, muscle pains, particularly in the back,
and headaches. It should improve in five days. Some people can improve in a day but the
fever will come back. Then abdominal pain will occur, liver damage begins to make yellow
skin. If this occurs, kidney problems and bleeding is possible. Luckily we have vaccine for the
Yellow Fever. But Remember to do it right away if the doctor says that you have Yellow
fever. Dont wait to long or its going to be harder to treat your virus.

So what can you do to not get Yellow Fever?

If you are traveling to tropical places, wear long shirts and long pants to make it harder for
the mosquitos to bite you. If its late, go to a nearby shelter where there are no ways for the
mosquitos to can get in. If a mosquito is inside the shelter, try using bug repellent or try to kill
it.
