An Overview
The present postal system in India came into existence with the Indian Post Office Act of
1854.The same year, the Railway Mail Service was introduced as also the sea mail service
from India to Great Britain & China. The first postage stamp valid across the country was
issued on 1st October 1854 which provided an affordable and uniform rate of postage based
on weight and not on distance. Department of Posts has proved to be one of the great
institutions of the country which plays an important role in the socio-economic activity of
the nation. The postal network of India is the largest in the world and touches the remotest
corners of the country.

Kozhikode Operations
Kozhikode Head Office is the Sorting hub linked to 180 -190 post offices. The Speed Post
Counter operates 24 hours, in three shifts 6 am to 1.30 pm, 1.30 to 8 pm, and 8 pm to 6
am. The Counter is manned by one postal assistant per shift. On an average 13,000 articles
are processed daily. Dispatch via Indian Railways to Kerala, TN and Karnataka, and via Air
India to other states are done. Online package tracking facility is also provided. The average
time for package processing at counter is 5- 10 minutes.


Issues Identified
Average waiting time in a queue increases to about 30 min from about 10 min during
peak hours
Manifest generator- not a dedicated personnel, resulting in overload of work and
delays
Despatches only in the afternoon, resulting in a days delay in packages received post
noon

Increase in frequency of despatches per day
