DOULAS AND BIRTH ATTENDENTS Ensure a clean placenta storage container with lid is accessible while mum is in labour. The placenta should be placed immediately into the container after 3 rd stage delivery, even if its still attached to baby. Before inspecting the placenta WASH HANDS and wear new disposable gloves. DO NOT put gauze, utensils or any other foreign objects into the placenta container, this can render the placenta useless. Take note if meconium is present in the amniotic fluid. Hospital births have a cooler bag, ice or ice packs and a labelled storage bowl with a labelled lid ready for the placenta. If placenta cannot be placed into a hospital refrigerator, ask the midwife to poor saline solution over the placenta before storing in a cooler bag. A family member should take the placenta home as soon as possible and place the placenta into a refrigerator. Caesarean births the container should be brought into theatre if possible or place placenta into a yellow biohazard bag and add saline if possible. Keep cool in a safe place for transfer to glass bowl. Phone the Placenta Encapsulation Specialist if you have any questions or queries.
