    Scientists extracted ancient DNA from frozen soil in Siberia and found genetic material from mammoths and other Ice Age animals that were thought to have gone extinct thousands of years earlier. The DNA evidence suggests that some mammoth populations may have survived on Wrangel Island off the coast of Siberia until as recently as 3,700 years ago, hundreds and even thousands of years later than previously thought. This discovery shows that Ice Age megafauna hung on longer in isolated refuges than expected.
