archduke Franz
Ferdinand of Austria-
Hungary and his wife
were murdered in
Sarajevo, Bosnia-
Herzegovina.
America Enters the War
At the start of World
War I, President Wilson
had declared the
neutrality of the United
States.
The sinking of the
Lusitania and other
German actions against
civilians drew American
sympathies to the
Allies.

invaded Poland.
