This book follows the travels of three people who made the journey three different ways. The first is Thomas Stevens, a miner, who went on the trip using a bicycle. Stevens finished his trip in 1884 and the book follows his full journey. The next is a former reporter Nellie Bly who raced against time hoping to become an American celebrity. Nellie finished the journey 1889 and becoming the first big American celebrity. The final person that the book follows is Joshua Slocum, who was a retired sea captain. Unlike Bly, Slocum went on his journey without any following or clamor, as he took his 36 foot boat across the world all by himself, facing dangerous ocean currents and waves along with pirates and bandits. The book follows all three simultaneously and combines the three trips into one big daring story of people who wanted to complete their goal and would not stop until they finished. I liked that this book had all three stories going on at once, this will make the story more interesting and prepare them for more advanced literature where there are multiple stories occurring at once.
