ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION THROUGH

GROUP WORK AND ITS EFFECTS ON INTERACTIVE
UNIVERSITY TEACHING
Summary: Learning English through group work is not sufficiently represented at
the universities in the Republic of Srpska. In traditional English language teaching,
teachers practice frontal teaching, which often leads to the lack of practical use of
speech by students, lack of contact between the students and teachers, and the
lack of students motivation. The classes where the students learn by working on
group projects should motivate them and present a challenge for every teacher
and modern university. The first part of the paper presents the theoretical part
about the importance and benefits of the group work in the teaching of English,
it is about the classroom organization, and about the importance of motivation
in foreign language acquisition. The second part of the paper presents the results
of attribution assessment scale for evaluating group work carried out during the
summer semester 2011/2012 on a sample of 130 students, and the results of
comparison of the effectiveness in teaching English using frontal teaching method
versus teaching through group work.
Key words: group work, frontal English language teaching, motivation, classroom
organization
