Press Release: Fight!

Life Matters
October 27, 2014 Cedar City, UT

Kimra and Heidi Allred joined together in creating a project focused on raising awareness to help prevent suicide. In the
last U.S. census 38,364 suicides were reported and for every 1 of those suicides 12 attempts were made. This makes
suicide the 10
th
leading cause of death in the nation. Every 13.7 minutes someone dies by suicide. These horrible
statistics are the reason they decided to do this project. During the week of September 22-27, 2014 they held a Suicide
Awareness Week on Southern Utah Universitys (SUU) campus.
During this week SUU students joined together to help prevent suicide. Kimra and Heidi hung fliers all over campus, as
well as handed them out, with information on suicide prevention and promoting the project. They created a banner
saying, Fight! Life Matters, Suicide Awareness Week, that students signed and put inspirational messages on to those
who may need the reminder that their life matters. On Saturday, September 27 they took a team of SUU students down
to St. George Utah to walk in the Out of the Darkness Walk sponsored by The American Foundation for Suicide
Prevention (AFSP). Here hundreds of people joined together to raise funds and show support for suicide prevention.
This project was done through the Education Designed to Give Experience (EDGE) program at SUU. This is a program the
university has designed to help give students a better EDGE upon graduation. Students are given the opportunity to
design their own project, often in their field of study. The options are wide open for what they would like to do, making
it a more personal experience.
This project taught students more about suicide prevention and made them aware of how important it is. Many lives
were touched and inspired. ###.
