Energy Lesson Plan

Topic: The Electromagnetic Spectrum

Andrew Warner
10/2/2014
Biology 9

Michigan Objective
HS-PS4-3.
Evaluate the claims, evidence, and reasoning behind the idea that electromagnetic radiation can be
described either by a wave model or a particle model, and that for some situations one model is more
useful than the other.

Synthesized Objective
Introduce the concept of energy by showing conceptual ideas through heat transfer.

Timeline
5 minutes - Attendance
50 minutes- Lecture
Students will start their long term lab that integrates the scientific method.
In order to use the scientific method from previous lessons, an experiment using the
color spectrum and radish plants will be conducted with the students. Students will work
as a class in order to figure out which color light (red, orange, yellow, blue, green,
purple, white, or absence of light) will produce the greatest plant growth. Students will
receive a lab worksheet that will guide them throughout the course of the study. This will
be the first time students will use a chart in high school for data recording.
Students will be split into eight groups and each will prepare a pot of soil and
seed. They will follow the methods for proper lab time noted in the worksheet.

Materials and Equipment
Electromagnetic spectrum PowerPoint
8 planting pots
Fertile soil
Radish seeds
7 different colored lights- white, ROYGBP
Cabinets that can be dark for an extended period of time
Lab worksheet
Assessment
This will take two weeks, so the assessment will come from students results section.
Why do you think X-ray technicians wear lead suits? Why does ultraviolet light cause
skin cancer? How do you think wireless devices connect to each other?
