Looking at the Suns Path in the Sky and Our

Shadows

This lesson offers a hand-on activity that engages and includes all
students in interacting with this lesson. Students will do the activity
themselves after simple instructions and then reflect on their
observations to come to a conclusion. Lesson also incorporates a
interactive science game on the computer that reflects on the activity
and engages different styles of learners.

ISE-T Standards Met:
2c. c. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students
diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital
tools and resources.

Lesson Plan

Objective: Students will observe the way the sun moves across the sky
by looking at their shadows.

Goal: Students will observe their shadows and grasp onto the concept
of the suns pathway across the sky and how it moves.

Equipment Needed:
Chalk
Computer with access to Internet (for post-activity)

Activity: Students will be taken outside and be paired into groups of
two. Each student will stand in a spot on the pavement and their
partner will trace their feet and the outline of their shadow. The
students will record the time. After an hour, the students will come
back outside and stand in the same spot as before and retrace their
shadows. Students will observe the change and record what they
noticed.

Post Activity: Teacher can project this interactive activity to the class
and describe the different shadows in relation to different positions of
the sun in the sky. Use the Outside activity of the game:

Review: Students will be asked to write a summary of their
observations and why the change in shadow occurred.
