Village raccoon

The wise village raccoon whisper history in my ear they have drained your historical memory
As Vasco da Gama invaded our shores, European renaissance replicating
It begun wanton destruction of African civilization
Diverse cultures, traditions of the soil suppressed behind mountains
Academic laboratory destroyed, African books murdered our adults buried
Royal monuments renamed with off shore names Vasco da Gama, Kruger and the great trek
As it saturated fear in Africans, east Africa Lake known by the Luo people as Namlolwe became
Lake Victoria
Raccoon spoke of Peter Abraham tell freedom and Mphahlele African affirmations Mbeki fitting
demographics I am an African
Raccoon spoke of names Biko, Sobukwe, Lumumba, Sakara, Luthuli, Solomon
I listened then he spoke of children of African diaspora fanon, booker T, Du bois and Malcolm
Realizing I knew these few yet he spoke of many
Tears were swollen in his eyes when he spoke of the 1976 Soweto uprising
I asked, what happened? Silence took over then he whispered desperate people will be
compelled to use desperate means, baptism to socio-economic liberty
As he reminisce of the Mau Mau waging war for their independence
As we stood under the tree rain drizzled and he spoke of the aroma brought by the soil and rain
drops
African experience indeed, he said this is a smell symbolizing renaissance of Africa
Raccoon then said I give two weapons consciousness and renaissance
Keep consciousness and propel change with renaissance, raccoon left
He exemplifies and amplifies wisdom in a finest tradition
