**Dates shifted from first schedule distributed to reflect changes within the entire School of Interiors Review Schedule. Posing Questions This studio is focused on learning and understanding the relationships between living and working in a community setting. Thus, because youve already designed a living space for one monk, you will now consider and apply the knowledge and experience you gained while doing your first residential design to the aspects of living that occur in communal spaces.
How are the experiences in living, working, and gathering alike and different? How should they be connected? What is the best cohesive environmental experience that you can provide a community of monks living and working together for the better part of their lives? What innovative potential does this community bear? How do the monks and outside partners or visitors interact in the environment? In what ways are you providing an environment that is equally accessible to all populations? These are the questions that you should be pondering in the coming months. The best design solutions will be those that consider the holistic, cultural relationships between activities, populations, and environment in the monastic community to which you have been assigned.
The Task : You are tasked with designing engaging, innovative, and accessible community spaces for the African Monastery that you have been previously assigned. This project is a long-term project using a team format. The final deliverables will be created as part of your large monastery studio team (Mariannhill, Ewu, or St. Maurus Hanga); however, you will work with a partner to design a specific space for your monastery. This specific space will be your primary responsibility throughout the length of the project. You will receive grades based on your individual contribution to the small team and large team, as well as team grades based on the performance and solution generated by the entire large group. You will complete evaluations throughout the project in order to monitor team dynamics. + Each large team will design the following required spaces : 1. Chapel (800 square feet) 2 assigned group members 2. Library (800 square feet) 2 assigned group members 3. Refectory (800 square feet) 2 assigned group members 4. Proposed Work Space (800 feet) 2 assigned group members ** If you have a group of 9 members rather than 8 members, you will be required to design an additional, adjacent welcome space of 400 square feet. This welcome space should be designed in combination with another space and be completed by a team of three individuals.
Making a proposal [ Due 10/22 ] : Your first task as a team is to create a group proposal presentation to make to the entire class. In your presentation, you must make a successful proposal for the following aspects of your project : 1. Identify the guiding mission statement of the monastic environment you are designing. 2. Identify the brand identity for the monastic community provide a color scheme, logo, slogan, and font selection. Be sure to use this visual language to brand your proposal presentation. (The color scheme you choose here is solely for the brandthe actual spaces could be a variation from this scheme.) 3. As a team, define what type of activity and space will be proposed as the work space. Support your proposal with research pertaining to site, client, and experiential insights. Tell us why this space would be the best use of space for the monastic communitywhy should they spend valuable financial resources to create this place? Sell your design to us. 4. As a team, identify the teammates that are best suited to design specific spaces and collaborate as pairs. Give us a profile of each pair and why they are the best individuals to design that specific space collaboratively. This may involve discussion of interests, passions, experience, and interpersonal dynamics. Sell us on this aspectwhy is this a dream team? ** After presenting to the class, you will receive constructive feedback on your proposal and may be asked to make some adjustments for the benefit of the team and project.
Receiving the Shell space... After creating a proposal, you will receive a shell space as a basis for your small scale monastic complex. Each large group will begin with the same shell space and will NOT be allowed to make changes to the column grid or window arrangement included in the space. In the schematic design phase, each group will be asked to locate the chapel, refectory, library, proposed work space, public restrooms (not to be designed), and welcome/reception space (only to be designed if you are in a group of 9 teammates).
Research and Programming : You will begin the research and programming phase of the project after completing a proposal. In pairs, you will create an activity analysis infographic that shows connections between activities. Use the original activity analysis handout from the cell design project as a guideline. You will place your activity analysis into a large team programming document read on to learn about that document.
As a single large team, you will create a programming document. You shall determine the size and format of the document. The document should begin with the Mission Statement previously agreed upon by the group in the proposal. The document should include at least 6 issues and 6 goals. Each goal should include at least 3 performance requirements, and each performance requirement should include at least 3 captioned, concept diagrams. Remember that all issues and goals may not apply to all spaces. Programming Document Requirements : + Must be bound (coil, comb or velo binding) + Must include a cover sheet + Must include a table of contents + Must reflect established brand identity + Must include a brief, professional profile of each designer + Must include required programmatic mission, issues, goals, performance requirements, and captioned concept diagrams. + Must deal with at least one Universal Design Principle through an issue/goal + Must include all activity analyses from each pair in the group
conceptual design : After completing all pre-design research and programming, you will move on to conceptual design as a large group. Requirements : + Individuals must complete 50 parti sketches and/or study models. + Large Team must create a 3D parti & written conceptual statement. + must show good craft + must visualize the conceptual direction of the team design + Individuals must complete 100 conceptual sketches (perspectives, details, sections, elevations, materials, products, etc) to present to the rest of the group. + Each group must create bubble/blocking diagrams and schematic floor plans for each specific space and an overview of the larger space as a whole.
Development pin-up : To check your progress, youll prepare for an informal pinup with the instructors. See requirements below: Requirements : + Fully developed Perspectives sketches (do not need to be rendered at this time) + Printed Floor Plan + Section sketches (does not need to be rendered at this time) + 3d parti + conceptual statement
Formal, juried review : You will present your work in a formal setting as a large team presentation. You will need to create a presentation board in Illustrator to show your work. You shall determine the appropriate size and format of the presentation board based on your proposal. Requirements : + Team Programming Document + 3D Parti + Conceptual Statement + Inspirational Images + Use of Google Sketchup model + CAD Drawing floor plan drawn at ! = 1 0 scale + Hand-Rendered section for each space + Hand-Rendered perspectives from Google Sketchup line drawings for each space + Materials & Fixtures Board with Legend + Presentation Board (created in Illustrator) at size determined by group
Final exhibit : After revising your design proposals using feedback from the formal review, you will create a final exhibit presentation to go on public display for a wide audience. The only additional requirements at this review are the creation of a physical model with rendered floor plan at the base and revisions based on juror feedback. Requirements : + Team Programming Document + 3D Parti + Conceptual Statement + Inspirational Images + Use of Google Sketchup model + CAD Drawing floor plan drawn at ! = 1 0 scale + Hand-Rendered section for each space + Hand-Rendered perspectives from Google Sketchup line drawings for each space + Materials & Fixtures Board with Legend + Presentation Board (created in Illustrator) at size determined by group + Physical Model with rendered floor plan in base for each space
