3rd Grade
Curriculum
Night!
Standards Based Grading
Wake County Public School System
requires the use of Standards Based
Grading for ALL students.
Students are graded on their mastery
of each 3rd grade standard in all
subjects, work habits, and conduct.
Standards Based Grading
Standards Based Grading in Wake
County does NOT equate to
percentages or letter grades, it
simply reflects student mastery of
each specific standard. A 4 DOES NOT
EQUAL an A, a Level 3 IS NOT a B,
etc.
Level Descriptor

an in-depth understanding of the
standards, concepts, and skills
taught during this reporting period.
3-Proficient

Interims & Report Cards

middle of each quarter. Report Cards
will be issued a week after each
quarter ends. Dates can be found on
the calendar tab on the Powell
website.
Read to Achieve
North Carolina General Assemblys Read to Achieve
program is part of the Excellent Public Schools
Act that became law in July 2012. The goal of the
Read to Achieve program is to ensure that every
student reads at grade level by the end of 3rd
grade. This program was updated by the NC State
Board of Education on Feb 6, 2014. Please see WCPSS
website at http://www.wcpss.net/parents/guides/
read-to-achieve/ for detailed information.
Read to Achieve continued
ALL students will complete ONE R2A passage for each
of the 12 standards that will count as a grade.
Students who have NOT met any exemptions will
complete 3 to 10 R2A passages for each of the 12
standards. These passages will be included in their
portfolio. Current exemptions are a 439 or higher on
the Beginning Of Grade Assessment, a Reading IEP,
less than 2 years of ESL. More exemptions are
forthcoming and will be shared when available. Please
see your students teacher with questions as they
arise.
CoGAT & IOWA
ALL 3rd grade students at Powell took the
Cognitive Abilities Test (CoGAT=aptitude) on
October 7, 8, and 9. Students who score in the
85th percentile or higher will be eligible to
take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills
(IOWA=achievement) assessment. Questions
regarding either of these assessments
should be directed to our AIG teacher,
Ms. Sydney Fox.
* Students identified for
Academically & Intellectually
Gifted (AIG) services will
began receiving services the
first quarter of their 4th
grade year.
EOGs...EEEK!
All standards assessed on the EOGs are taught during
our year in 3rd grade. This is a serious assessment, but
not something that we need to pressure or stress our
students about. The best recommendations we can give
to students are to pay attention, try their best
throughout the year, and take ownership of their own
learning. Families should encourage these skills at
home, as well as, promote reading everyday, talking with
your student, and asking them questions about what
they are learning and reading. We are in this together
with the ultimate goal being student success!
EOGS continued
ALL 3rd graders are required by the state of North
Carolina to take the End of Grade (EOG)
assessments in Math and English Language Arts.
EOGs will be taken at then end of May/beginning
of June this year. More information regarding
EOGs will be shared as its available.
Field Trips
We will be going to the NC Art
Museum (April/May) and having
Starlab (inflatable planetarium)
brought to school this year. *Please
be sure to register as a WCPSS
volunteer if you are planning to join
in on the fun!
Thank you!
Your support is greatly
appreciated. Check out our
