Classical and Art Deco
Architecture is considered art. There are many architectural designs; each is unique in their own
away. Classical and Art deco are two different types of designs.
Classical is from 700 to 146 B.C; it is very old. The sensory elements appear to have a very pale
white or yellow color. The texture appears to be very smooth and the building is in ruins.
Classical has formal elements like a rectangular shape and columns that support the building.
The columns are fluted, which means they have lines carved in them. Technical elements tell us
how the classical buildings were made out of stone or rock. They were usually located on
mountains. It has three different types of columns which are Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Some
of these columns are simple, but some are very decorative. The expressive elements give off a
very powerful feeling.
Art deco is from the 1920s to the 1930s. It is more modern than classical. The houses in the
movie The Great Gatsby would be an excellent example of Art Deco. The sensory elements
have neon colors and lights; it has a very jazzy and fun look. Sharp edges, zigzags and vertical
lines are formal elements. Art deco has many expressive elements. The technical element is very
artistic and has so much space. It has vivid colors, bright lights, beautiful plant life surrounding
it, and amazing windows and doors. Art deco is very luxurious.
Classical and Art deco are very different from each other. They were both from different times in
history. In the classical era people wore togas and they were Greek or Roman. In the Art deco era
women had bob haircuts, wore beautiful dresses and people listened to jazz. Classical is
powerful looking and made out of rock while Art deco is very colorful with lights.
