This document contains the questions from a Mechanical Vibrations midterm exam taken on November 18th, 2013. The first question asks students to use the energy principle to replace a given vibrating system with an equivalent system, using displacement as the generalized coordinate. The second question has students derive the differential equation of motion and find the undamped natural frequency for another given system, using a small angle assumption. The third question asks students to determine the time-dependent behavior of the first system.

1. Replace the given system by an equivalent system using "energy principle". Use "x", the displacement of the mass centre of the disk, as generalized coordinate. Note that disk of mass "m" rolls without slip. AB and CD are rigid massless bars. BC is an inextensible cord. [08 points]
2. Using the indicated generalized coordinate, use Newton's Law to derive the differential equation governing the motion of the system given below and also determine the system's undamped natural frequency. Note that the small angle assumption is used. [08 points]
3. Determine x 1 (t) for the system given below. [09 points]
