Language Arts: We have started our
small reading groups and we are off
and running! This year Ill teach a small
phonics lesson to the class and then
reinforce the phonics skills your child
needs again in his or her reading group.
The comprehension skills we are
working on currently are identifying the
beginning, middle, and end of a story
and recounting the details of a story. In
writing, we are focused on opinion
pieces where the students are able to
express their opinions in their writing.
Students should be mindful of using
capitals, periods, and using spelling
books as a resource to help them when
needed.

Math: In math weve been

reviewing the strategies
needed for addition and
subtraction to solve
problems as
mathematicians. We also
have been reviewing coin
identification and how to
add coins and make
change. Well continue
working on learning how to
show our math thinking in
writing.

Jargon Journal: I am thrilled to tell you

about our vocabulary journals that we
are working on this year! Each week
students will be identifying four
vocabulary words which will be used to
make connections and will be added to
their repertoire of words! Ill be
listening to see when students use their
words in speech and writing.

Social Studies: Our first units
explore different types of
communities, people and places
within a community, and our
communitys history. Well also
distinguish the difference
between wants and needs, learn
about goods and services, and
how people earn and use money.
I have reached out to Mayor
Comitta and she is going to visit
Starkweather to speak about
being a leader in West Chester!
Science: In the fall second graders
study soil. Weve begun to observe
and document the changes our
plant matter makes over the next
