MANUSCRIPTAL PATTERNS OF THE FIRST SERBIAN PRINTED

SERVICE BOOKS IN THE MANUSCRIPTAL COLLECTION OF
VISOKI DECANI MONASTERY
This paper analyzes liturgical manuscripts containing texts of the Liturgy of
Presanctified Gifts from the Visoki Decani Monastery. It is found that these texts
belong to two redactional groups: i) larger group of athonite redaction of the final
type and ii) smaller group of so-called mixed redactions. This paper shows that
manuscripts of the athonite redaction of final type were used as the basis for the first
Serbian service books. The analyzed manuscripts can be used to trace the process of

liturgical changes that was underway in the Orthodox Church of Hellenic and Slavic
linguistic domains during XIV century. The analyzed manuscripts have preserved
partially older elements of the liturgical tradition. Their main flow also shows that
the XIV-century Serbian Church was actively involved in dynamic and creative
processes of liturgical codification, as well as processes establishing the basis of
liturgical order that still exists inits practice to this day.
