Description of Activity/Task/Experience that demonstrates I am at or above standard in the

specific skills for the standard mentioned above:
One experience that I have been through that required the standard listed above was
when my friends and I tried to start a Key Club at our school last year (as well as this year). Key
Club is a club dedicated to servicing the community and raising funds for the Eliminate Project,
in conjunction with Kiwanis International and UNICEF, to eliminate maternal and neonatal
tetanus. Although many schools in the Hillsboro-Portland area have a Key Club, Liberty hasnt
had one for some time, and we wanted to join the Key Club family and make a difference in our
community. I am the treasurer, meaning that I am responsible for handling the funds raised, as
well as making sure they get sent to the correct outlets. However, with starting a new Key Club,
a lot of planning and organizing had to be done, and a lot of initiative was needed. We started
by contacting the lieutenant governor of the Key Club district nearest us, and looking for an
advisor, as well as getting people to join the club. Throughout the summer, we planned and held
meetings to get others excited, as well as listened to others ideas of how to raise money, and
grew closer as a group at the same time. Between the five officers, we had to constantly
cooperate in order to get things done and get our club going. We are currently still working to
get the club started this year, and are excited for the future of Key Club at Liberty.
Explanation/Reflection of how the activity/task/experience described above meets or exceeds
the specific skills of the standard mentioned above:
Starting a new club, especially one that is part of an international network, is no easy
task. We encountered a number of problems, including how to get people committed to the club,
finding and filling out all the paperwork involved, and learning the tasks us officers faced.
However, by cooperating with each other and respecting others ideas to solutions, we were
able to solve most of these problems. Especially with the five officers, we had to be held
responsible for accomplishing our tasks if we wanted our club to be successful. Not only did we
have to be dependable, but also organized and display initiative to get things done. Each of us
had to keep track of deadlines and dates for events, such as the beach clean-up, Key Club
meetings, and other volunteering events. We also had to respect that others joining the club
might not be as excited nor committed to getting the club started and had to work on ways to
involve them as well, and make everyone feel comfortable and welcomed. This year, we again
have to exceed the standard in order to make our club a success, but are looking forward to do
so.
