Description'of'Activity'
Throughout!this!experience,!the!students!will!be!introduced!to!and!extend!on!their!previous!knowledge!of!
magnets!and!magnetism.!The!teacher!will!identify!the!students!prior!knowledge!of!magnets!and!the!uses!of!
magnets!as!a!class!through!a!brief!presentation!using!the!IWB!(see!SMART!notebook!file!attached!below).!!
The!students!will!then!create!a!mind!map,!using!the!IWB.!The!teacher!will!prompt!the!students!through!
guided!questioning!which!may!include:!!!
What!do!magnets!have!at!both!ends?!
What!are!magnets!are!attracted!to?!And!what!are!they!no!attracted!to?!
How!are!magnets!are!used!in!devices?!
After!this,!the!students!will!be!separated!into!groups!of!three!and!create!a!mind!map!extending!on!what!
they!know!about!magnets.!Each!group!will!be!encouraged!to!use!an!iPad!to!research!and!will!be!provided!a!
piece!of!A3!paper!to!write!on.!!The!students!will!discuss!and!represent!through!a!mind!map:!

Description'of'Activity*
The!students!will!briefly!recap!on!the!previous!lesson!of!magnets!in!pairs!and!then!share!back!to!the!class.!The!teacher!
will!then!introduce!the!three!stations!and!the!objective!of!each!station.!After,!the!students!will!be!divided!into!groups!
of!four!and!guided!to!their!stations.!!
Station*1:!Magnetic!Pole!Identification!(Adapted*from*CSIRO,*2011)*
Objective:!Identify!which!is!the!north!pole!and!which!is!the!south!
Method:!Using!the!small!magnet!and!compass!establish!which!pole!of!the!large!magnet!is!the!N!pole!and!which!is!the!S!
pole.!After,!record!findings!in!science!book!(see!appendix!B).!

Station*2:!Rescuing!the!fallen!shapes!(Adapted*from*Stuck*on*You*by*McNeice,*2005)!
Objective:!Will!magnets!work!in!water?!
Method:!first,!fill!the!glass!with!water!and!place!the!magnetic!shapes!inside.!Then!attempt!to!rescue!the!shapes!
without!putting!anything!in!the!water!or!removing!the!water.!

First,!place!all!the!materials!(wood,!paper!clips!and!metals)!on!the!table.!Then!rub!the!magnet!against!the!nail!in!one!
direction.!After!this,!place!the!nail!over!each!object!and!record!what!happens!in!science!book!(see!appendix!A).!
Second,!demagnetize!the!nail!by!dropping!it!from!a!height!onto!the!floor.!Check!if!nail!is!demagnetized!by!placing!it!
over!the!same!materials!and!observe!what!happens.!!
The!teacher!will!have!prompting!questions!for!extension:!
