Clarks Grade 5/6 Class


November Newsletter
Language Arts:
All year long the Grade 5s and 6s will be focusing on various reading and writing activities.
We will be using Barbara Maricondas narrative and expository writing resources. We will
also focus on daily journal writing, handwriting, reading comprehension activities,
vocabulary, as well as various novel studies throughout the year.

Science:
In Science the Grade 5s and 6s have started to learn about Sky Science. In this unit
they will:
Recognize that the apparent movement in the night sky is regular and predictable,
explain how this apparent movement is related to Earths rotation
Describe seasonal changes in the length of day and night and in the angle of the
Sun above the horizon
Recognize that the Moons phases are regular and predictable, and describe the
cycle of the phases
Recognize that the other seven known planets, which revolve around the Sun, have
characteristics and surface conditions that are different from Earth

Social:
In Social we have been learning about Democracy. The students have been focusing on
what they word Democracy means. They have also been learning about the Charter of
Rights and Freedoms.

Math 5:
In Grade 5 math, we have moved on to work the first part of number sense. We will be
describing and representing whole numbers to 1 million, working on multiplication and using
mental math strategies, and beginning to work on division of 3 digit numbers by a single
number. This will continue into December and right up to Christmas.

Math 6:
In Math the Grade 6s have been working on 2 digit by 2 digit and 3 digit by 2 digit
multiplication. This month they will be working on long division, rounding numbers, and
estimating sums and differences.

Reminders:

Weekly Home Reading Logs are due every Wednesday.


Please remember to check and initial your childs agenda every night. Important
reminders and notes will always be written in agendas.
Please write a note in your childs agenda if he/she will be going home for lunch
that day.
Red Folders go home every Wednesday. Please return every Thursday.
