One Direction
One Direction (also known as 1D) are a young boy band, all under the age of 30. They are an
English-Irish pop boy band based in London. Their band includes Niall Horan, Zayn Malik,
Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. During the seventh series of The X Factor,
they finished with an overall placing of third place. They signed a performing track and that
is where their career began. They started off creating many songs not long after, in which all
topped the charts and stayed number one for periods of times. Their first songs included,
Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012) and Midnight Memories (2013) which broke
records, topped charts in most major markets, and generated hit singles including "What
Makes You Beautiful", "Live While We're Young" and "Story of My Life", all of which have
been a huge success.

Niall Horan
The Singer
Niall Horan was born on September 13, 1993, in Mullingar,
County Westmeath, Ireland. He is the only member in One
Direction who is Irish. During his school years, he showed
talent for singing and performing. At the age of 16, he
auditioned for the television show The X Factor and was
accepted into the competition as a solo artist. Although he did not make the final rounds as
a solo vocalist, he joined forces with four other contestants to form the successful boy band
named One Direction, who are now one of the biggest bands in the world.
Childhood and School Years
Niall James Horan, was born on September 13, 1993, in Mullingar, County Westmeath,
Ireland. His parents, Bobby and Maura Horan, divorced when he was a child. He and his
older brother, Greg, moved back and forth between their parents' two households before
settling in with their father. Niall claims that this was one of the changing moments in his
life, circling around his parents and not able to see or have a positive connection between
the two. He went to a school in Ireland called St. Kenny National School. This is where he
discovered his passion for music, he joined the choir and performed in the school plays. He
also attended a secondary school at Coliste Mhuire (Mary's College), which was also in
Mullingar.
Competing on The X Factor
In 2010, when Niall was just 16 years old, he decided to audition for the television talent
competition called The X Factor. He moved up through several rounds of preliminary
auditions but unfortunately that is where his solo act ended, but he was luckily
acknowledged for his talents and was formed with four other boys. Niall Horan with Harry
Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson joined forces to form the boy band
called One Direction.

Liam Payne
The Singer:
Liam Payne is one of the five members of the British pop boy
band One Direction.
Liam Payne was born on the 29th of August in 1993, in
Wolverhampton in England. He had always shown a very strong
passion for music. This passion for music and performing led him
to compete on the television talent competition The X Factor in
2008 and again in 2010. On his second try he attracted positive
notice and was joined up with four other boys to create a band well known today as One
Direction. Although the band did not win The X Factor, they were acknowledged by the
public and are now considered one of the biggest bands in this time.
Childhood and School Years
Liam attended the school of St. Peter's Collegiate which was located in Wolverhampton. As
a teenager, he had a strong connection in both music and sports. He was a member of the
Wolverhampton & Bilston Athletics Club and trained as a runner
Competing on The X factor
Liam auditioned for the television show/ competition The X Factor in 2008. Liam performed
well enough to become one of the final 24 competitors on the show, before he was voted
out. For the next two years, he continued to train as a vocalist. In 2010 he auctioned again
and moved further up in the competition, winning praise for his renditions of songs like "Cry
Me a River" and Oasis's "Stop Crying Your Heart Out." It was after this that he was
connected with the forming band One Direction.

Harry Styles
The Singer
Harry Styles was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England, on
February 1, 1994. The first time he sang was in a band in a school
competition. That was where he developed his passion for
singing. Following in 2010 when he performed on the television
show The X Factor, where the judges combined him with four
other young male singers to form One Direction. Despite finishing
third in the contest, One Direction received a recording contract and became a best-selling
boy band.
Childhood and School Years
Harry was born on the 1st of February, 1994, in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, in the West
Midlands region of England. His parents, Des and Anne, divorced when he was just 7 years
old causing him to develop a sad period. He and his sister Gemma were brought up by their
mother in the town of Holmes Chapel in Cheshire. Harry attended Holmes Chapel
Comprehensive School, where he and three of his friends formed a band called White
Eskimo. Harry was White Eskimo's lead singer, and the band was popular enough to win a
band competition at their school.

Zayne Malik
Competing on The X Factor
During 2010, when Zayne was 17 years old, he competed in the
seventh season of the television show The X Factor. His choice of
song for the auditions was Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely".
Although he expressed talent he was cut before the finals, but
like the other band members, in a surprise move, he was paired
up with fellow competitors Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis
Tomlinson and Zayn Malik to form a new group act for the remainder of the competition.
Zayn Malik is one of the five members of One Direction, an English-Irish boy band that has
topped the pop charts.
Passions
Zayn Malik was born on the 12th of January in 1993, in a town called Bradford located in
England. He was born into a family of English-Pakistani descent. He had an early love for
singing and performing, this was expressed in school plays and musicals. At the age of 17, he
competed in the television competition The X Factor. The group he was paired up with are
now one of the biggest bands in this time.
Childhood and School Years
Zaynes father, Yaser Malik, has an English-Pakistani background and his mother, Patricia
(known as Tricia), is English. He has one older sister, named Doniya, and two younger
sisters, called Waliyha and Safaa. Their family religion belongs to the Muslim faith. Zayne
grew up in East Bowling, located south of the Bradford city centre. He attended Lower Fields
Primary School and Tong High School in Bradford. As a teenager he took performing arts
courses and appeared in many school productions.

Louis Tomlinson
Summary
Louis Tomlinson was born on the 24TH of December in 1991, in
Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. When he was a child and
a teen he acted and sang on television for minor companies. He
auditioned successfully for television talent competition The X
Factor in 2010. The judges like the other boys recognised talent
and paired Louis with Niall, Zayne, Harry, and Liam.
Childhood and School Years
Louis Tomlinson was born on December 24, 1991, in the town of Doncaster in South
Yorkshire, England. His parents, Johanna and Troy Austin, divorced when he was young, and
he took his stepfather Mark Tomlinson's last name as his own. Tomlinson has five younger
stepsisters: Georgia, Charlotte, Felicity and twins Daisy and Phoebe.
When Louis Tomlinson was eleven years he took acting lessons and received small parts on
the television dramas If I Had You and Waterloo Road.
Competing on The X Factor
Tomlinson auditioned for the television talent competition The X Factor in 2009, but was
turned down. However, when he returned to try out for the show's seventh season in 2010,
he was very successful and passed singing "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's. This
brought him successfully into the competition. He advanced for several further rounds,
Although He was eliminated before the final round, but the judges united him with his
fellow competitors Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik to form a group act.
This new band, called One Direction, finished the competition in third place and received a
contract with Simon Cowell's music label.
