Hurricanes - development

The first stage of a Hurricane a Tropical Disturbance: A mass of thunderstorms that have
slight wind circulation. Winds will increase more than 20 knots or 23 miles per hour.

The second stage of a hurricane A Tropical Depression: A group of thunderstorms the

come together under atmospheric conditions for a certain amount of time.

The third stage of a Hurricane A Tropical Depression: Winds get higher and stronger.
Winds will get up to 35-64 knots (39-73 mph). Is becomes organized and starts looking like a
hurricane with a circular shape.

Hurricanes What is it?

Hurricanes

are large, swirling storms

with high speed winds that form over
warm ocean waters.
Also known as Tropical Cyclones.
Hurricanes can be very dangerous to
be out in.

Hurricanes When is hurricane season?

In the North Atlantic, hurricanes occur mostly

during the fall and summer months.

The actual hurricane season starts June 1 and

ends November 30.

Hurricanes can start to form in may and

continue till December in the Caribbean Sea or
the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricanes How strong they can get

Winds from a hurricane can reach to over 200 miles per hour.
They can go to a Category 6 Most dangerous type of
hurricane.
Category 1 winds range from 74 to 95 mph.
Category 5 winds range from 156 or stronger.
If a category 6 were created, it would be in the range of 176
196 mph.
The strongest winds in a hurricane are usually around the eye

Hurricanes Why do they have names?

People have had trouble identifying them for as

long as they have been tracking them.
Forecasters and Newspapers devised names for
hurricanes based on their time period or their
geographic location/intensity. This started in the
20th century.
The hurricane names alternate between male and
female names.

Hurricanes how dangerous they can be

Hurricanes can be up to 600 miles across.

They have winds spiraling inward and upward

at fast speeds.

Light winds will get stronger.

Winds will come together and get force to go

up.

Humid air will rise and make the storm clouds.

Over the last 200 years, hurricanes have led to

deaths of around 2 million people.
