Beacon Hose Blaze - October 2014
Beacon Hose Blaze - October 2014
Cooler weather and shorter days always remind me of Fire Prevention. This year Beacon
Hose Company No. 1 has been busy putting the show together for this years event. The
winners of the Coloring Contest will be having breakfast with "Sparky" and getting a ride to
school in a fire truck. During the day we will be visiting the schools followed by our Open
House at 6:00pm. Please make an effort to stop by and help on this very rewarding day.
We have been meeting with the Membership Committee and have complied a list of
members activities from the previous year. We will be sending out letters to ask members,
that have not made their minimum requirements, what can be done to help them achieve this
this goal. Our intent is to set a path for each member to meet their required commitment.
Department Physicals and Fit Testing will continue throughout October. If a member has
not completed their Physical and Fit Test, they will be removed from Active Firefighter Status.
If you need to make arrangements for your physical, please contact the Chief's Office.
While meeting with the Finance Board and our Treasurers we have identified the need to
increase fundraising to complete this years activities. Several fundraisers are being planned
including a Breakfast, Cow Chip Raffle, Casino Trip and, of course, the Christmas Tree Sales.
Please commit some time to "Your Beacon Hose". We are trying to highlight the FUN in
FUN-draisers.
Looking at our value statement, the first word that is highlighted is SAFETY. When asked
to use a single word to define safety I think of the word "Courage". As emergency responders
we are often times confronted with incidents that require immediate action. Although we
need to respond quickly...there is never an excuse to jeopardize the safety of the public we
protect, our crew members and ourselves. Beacon Hose Company No. 1 prides itself in being a
competent and professional organization. Take responsibility for your actions. Think and
operate safely. So how does the word "Courage" define safety? Have the courage to identify
and stop an unsafe act. If youre in a vehicle and someone is not belted...tell them to buckle
up!! If someone is driving too fasttell them to slow down!! Officers cannot be everywhere and
everyone must become an advocate for safety....OUR LIVES DEPEND ON IT!!!
Thanks to everyone for your help this past month. Beacon Hose Company No. 1 was
represented at the 2014 State Fireman's Convention and we brought a trophy home!!!
Hope to see you around the station.

Our 18 winning artists will be treated to Breakfast, a gift certificate to BF Pizza and a ride to school in the
emergency vehicle of their choice on Wednesday, October 8th.
Fire Prevention Week occurs annually in October during the week in which October 9 falls, commemorating
the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a fire, but they need to be
working. Unfortunately, many home fire deaths result from fires where a smoke alarm is present
but does not operate. This years Fire Prevention Week theme focuses on motivating people
to test their smoke alarms each month to make sure theyre working properly.
**Having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts the risk of dying in a fire in half.
**On average each year, three out of five home fire deaths result in fires where there are either
no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
**In one-quarter (23 percent) of the home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present but did not sound.
