ESSAY BRIEF
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify and evaluate social, historical and cultural contexts of architecture, cities and landscapes.
2. Analyse and debate architectural perceptions and manifestations of a range of cultures and
societies.
3. Recognise the relationship between historic and contemporary architectural contexts.
4. Evaluate information and use it to plan and develop investigation strategies and responses.
5. Use visual, verbal and written communication methods to convey contextual knowledge and
understanding.
6. Use a referencing system related to academic writing properly in order to avoid plagiarism, e.g.
the Harvard referencing system.

RESEARCH QUESTION:
The relationship between the object and the intervening spaces is not formal: it is always

rooted in the context of a particular setting Dalibor Vesely (in Brooker and Stone, 2007, p. 57).

THE ESSAY:

3 different patchworks will be submitted throughout the year, which will altogether
make up the whole essay
The essay will be based on a particular building in which I will research and analyse
the buildings context in terms of both history and design
A poster is also required alongside the final submission which will represent the
research analysis of the essay

E-TEST BRIEF
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. My ability to identify and evaluate the social, historical and cultural contexts of architecture,
cities and landscapes, through both discussion and formal critique, will be assessed in the etest.
2. My ability to recognise the relationship between historic and contemporary architectural
contexts will also be assessed in the e-test.

THE E-TEST:

Multiple choice assessment which will assess my knowledge on Architecture in


context 1 and be based on content from the lectures
Can take slides from Anas lectures with notes on them, in to the test with me
