UNESCO and Futbol Club Barcelona Signing Partnership On 23 November
23 November
Promotion of ethics and values in sports through education
and public awareness raising, particularly to combat racism
and violence in sports, make up the core of the partnership
agreement that Koïchiro Matsuura, UNESCO’s Director
General, and Joan Laporta I Estruch, President of the
Futbol Club Barcelona, will sign on 23 November at
UNESCO Headquarters. La Fundació FCBarcelona, the Centre UNESCO de Catalunya and
the Comisión Nacional Española de Cooperación con la UNESCO are also associated with this
partnership between the Organization and Barcelona’s famous soccer club, which aims to
raise public awareness of the role played by education and sport in the development and well
being of children and youth.
Educational and antidoping awareness programmes, as well as a number of activities and initiatives
promoting the fight against exclusion, encouraging literacy and education for disadvantaged
children and youth, and supporting citizenship education, are included in the partnership.
In order to define the priorities and schedule for concrete activities to be undertaken within the
partnership and to make sure they are effectively implemented and followed up, representatives of
the UNESCO Futbol Club Barcelona partnership signatories will form a steering committee and
meet at least twice a year.
The various partnerships between UNESCO and the private sector produce exceptionally positive
results, as they are based on synergies and common values. By involving the private sector in the
Organization’s programmes, they make it possible to mobilize considerable resources and energy for
achieving goals.
