SMPS!

In 1997 Apple2 is designed switch mode power

supply

Used to convert mains voltage in to lower DC

voltages which are required the peripherals inside
the CPU.

They are the only type of power supply used in

computers

SMPS working
The SMPS receives the AC power convert in
to DC with the help of bridge rectifier and
stabilizes the DC voltage separately
Then with the help of a switching transformer
the AC voltage converts in to DC
Again they will be stabilized in the secondary
port
Then connected to the secondary port with
help of cables with connectors

Functions of SMPS

Changing the form of electric power

eg

electricity
from the grid
transmitted in the form of ac

is

Regulation
Safety isolation :in most applications o/p
have to be isolated from the i/p

Fig : computer SMPS

Inside

Have exhaust fan , IC chips , resistors , capacitors

Rectifiers , filters , step-down transformers have a

main roll in AC to DC conversion

Advantages

Higher power efficiency

Substantially smaller and lighter than a

linear supply due smaller transformer size

and weight.

Types

Have mainly three types

AT SMPS (Advanced Technology)

ATX SMPS (Advanced TechnologyExtended)

BTX SMPS (Balanced Technologyextended)

AT SMPS

Used up to pentium3 computers

Have two connectors: p8 &p9

P8 &p9 used to give power to motherboard

Also have 4 or 5 connectors each have 4

wires

4 pin connectors used to give power to

HDD ,FDD ,CDD.

cntd....

Have red(+5v), yellow(+12v), blue(-12v),

orange (+5v), white(-5v),and black(GND)

colour wires.

The 4 pin connectors <= 2 black+ 1 red+ 1

yellow.(17v)

Advanced technology

AT works with a
mechanical switch

The switching is
not programmable

AT has 12 pin
power connector
