Jumping Statistics

In this lesson, students will conduct an experiment that

involves jumping and marking. They will then use the data collected to
explore central tendency. Duration: two hours.
The activity takes place in groups of four, each group member having a
clear role. Every group has a group tutor, who will be taught
firsthand the requires statistic content and then teach it to the group.
Thus, the aim of peer learning is met. The tutors are gitls, in order to
encourage girls participation and leading skills. Students should work
collaboratively to collect and manipulate data.

Lesson: Day 1Data Collection


1. Choose a student to model the correct way to perform the different
jumps.
2. Explain the procedures for measuring.
Take the chart paper off the wall and place on a table to make
measurements.
Use the meter stick to measure the vertical distance between the
highest point on the standing mark and the appropriate jump mark.
3. Measure to the nearest centimeter and record on data collection
sheet.
4. Address student questions/concerns as needed.
5. While students are working, the teacher should circulate and probe
student
reasoning. Here are some prompts:
Explain what you are currently doing.
Why are you doing the activity this way?
Is your result efficient? Why or why not?
Explain the difference between mean and median.
Why is range an interesting quantity to measure?

Lesson: Day 2Data Analysis


1. Ask students to recap what they accomplished during the previous
class period.
2. Students should work collaboratively to fill in the worksheet.

3. Lead a class discussion where students share their conclusions.


4. Encourage students to ask questions of each other to further explain
their
thoughts.
5. Ask students to complete an "exit slip"find mean, median, mode,
and range of a sample set of data, and hand slip to the teacher upon
exiting the classroom.
