Title: African Coil Pot

Suggested Time: 1 class period

Unit: African Art


Medium: Model Magic

Instructional Objectives (2-3): 1.) Uses Model Magic to create a coil ceramic vase
(KS) 2.) Creates a sculpture that uses a variety of coils (KS)

Elements of Art (1-3) line, color, shape, form, space, texture, value

Principles of Design (1-3) repetition, pattern, movement, balance, emphasis, contrast, unity

Materials and Equipment: Model magic

Vocabulary (4-5): Coil, Ceramics, Sculpture, and Pinch

Art Production (based on Madeline Hunter model)

1.) Show a PowerPoint on how the African culture uses Coil Pots
2.) Explain the vocabulary that will be used for this project
3.) Show how to roll the model magic into snakes
4.) Demonstrate how to coil the snakes
5.) Let the students try to coil
6.) Demonstrate how to attach each coil together
7.) Let the students build their coil pots
8.) Photograph each students pot by black construction paper

Aesthetic Questions (1-2): How do you think that the African Tribes used the coil pots?

Art Criticism / Analysis Questions (3-5): Set all coil pots on a table and everyone
looks at it,

Evaluation Criteria (should relate to objectives): Photograph your coil pot once you
are finished

Modifications / Special Notes / Drawing


For a gifted child, If they finished early I would have them add more details.
For a child with a mental disability, I would have them wear gloves so they did not have
to touch the model magic or I would add oats to change the texture of the model magic.
