ABSTRACT

Reinforced Interlocking Hollow Brick Beam System (RIHBS) was recently

proposed in the construction of load bearing wall. However, this system has been
extended to carry a flexural load applied to the beam. This thesis presents the fullscale experimental tests on cantilever beam of RIHBS. Reinforcement bars are
installed in the beam to improve the flexural and shear behaviour of the beam.
Besides, this will form a composite action where the interlocking mechanism will act
compositely with reinforcement bars in the system. The results show that cantilever
beam with reinforcement bars installed at the top and bottom of the beam has at least
30% higher strength capacity compared with cantilever beam with reinforcement
bars installed at the top of the beam. Besides, infill used in the proposed beam has
influenced the strength capacity as the composite action relied on the strength of the
infill mortar.
