The English language often takes on different characteristics when it is used by particular
societies. This assignment is designed to enhance your sensitivity to the characteristics of the
English language as it is used in your local community. This knowledge is important if a teacher
is to be able to teach his / her student effectively.
Assignment tasks:
1. Engage TWO of your colleagues in a short conversation on a topic of your own choosing.
The conversation may be bilingual but it needs to include more English than other
languages. Record the conversations.
2. Choose one particular aspect of language (for example, the past tense or subject verb
cohesion.
3. Analyse the language used in the conversation in terms of the language aspect that you
have chosen.
4. Write a report on the differences between the standard English language rules of the
language aspect and the way it is realized by the Malaysian speakers of the English
language. Your report must be 2500 to 3000 words in length and it must be written in the
appropriate academic style and convention.
5. You are encouraged to refer to the module and other grammar books for reference on the
grammar of standard English.
