Explain how figurative
language contributes to
the meaning of a poem.

Checking for Understanding:(1 min, whole group)

The teacher underlines a hyperbole and asks students if they think it is a hyperbole.
If students think it is then they should give thumbs up, they should give thumbs
down if they dont.
Guided Practice: (5 min, Whole Group)
Students then find other forms of figurative language in the song lyrics and
underline them on the Promethean board. The teacher clarifies if they are correct
and explains any misunderstandings.
Closure: (3 min, Whole group)
The teacher asks the class: How does figurative language contribute to the
meaning of a poem? The teacher then allows three students to share their
thoughts.
Independent Practice: (30 min, Groups of 3-4)
Students are placed into groups of 3-4 depending on the class size. Groups are
numbered 1-6. Students in each group are given a set of song lyrics that contain
figurative language. One group will receive song lyrics with Hyperbole. The next
group will receive song lyrics with Alliteration. The other groups will receive
Personification, Simile, Metaphor and Onomatopoeia. There will be a total of six
groups with song lyrics. Each group will be given 5 minutes to find the example of
figurative language that is listed on their song lyrics. When 5 minutes are complete,
groups will rotate to the group next to them. Group 1 will rotate to Group 2 and
Group 2 will rotate to Group 3 and so on. This will continue until each group has
seen all six song lyrics and found the example of figurative language. After this is
completed, the teacher will call on a person from each group to name their example
of figurative language that they found at their original group. For example, group 1
will name the example that they found at group table 1. This will continue until the
teacher hears from each group.

Reflection Attached on Lesson Plan Construction

What worked:
What parts of the lesson led to engagement
and student learning?
Allowing students to find examples on the
Promethean Board encouraged engagement.
Having students work in groups also
encouraged their engagement. They were
able to communicate their ideas to each
other.

Improvements:
How can you increase student learning,
engagement, etc., next time you teach this
lesson? Allowing students to use their own
song lyrics would increase engagement.
Students would be motivated to use
something that they are already familiar with.

Overall Implications for your teaching:

What did you learn from teaching this lesson
that can apply to other lessons? I learned that
it is important to assign groups based on
performance levels. Some groups worked
well, while others were difficult to stay on
task or motivate to participate.

Firework
Do you ever feel
Like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind
Wanting to start again
Do you ever feel
Feel so paper-thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in
Do you ever feel
Already buried deep
Six feet under
Screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's
Still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you
You just gotta
Ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July
'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on show them what you're worth

UNT Lesson Plan

Make them go, "Oh, oh, oh"
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make them go, "Oh, oh, oh"
You're gonna leave them all in awe
You don't have to feel
Like a waste of space
You're original
Cannot be replaced

If you only knew

What the future holds
After a hurricane
Comes a rainbow
Maybe the reason why
All the doors are closed
So you could open one
That leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt
Your heart will glow
And when it's time you know
You just gotta

Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through

FIND 1 EXAMPLE OF ALLITERATION
High Hopes by Frank Sinatra
Next time you're found
With your chin on the ground
There's a lot to be learned
So look around
Just what makes that little old ant
Think he'll move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, can't
Move a rubber tree plant
But he's got high hopes
He's got high hopes
He's got high apple pie
In the sky hopes
So any time you're gettin' low
'Stead of lettin' go, just remember that ant
Oops, there goes another rubber tree plant

Find 1 Example of Hyperbole
"Fireflies" by Owl City
You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep
'Cause they'd fill the open air
And leave tear drops everywhere
You'd think me rude
But I would just stand and stare
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance
A foxtrot above my head
A sock hop beneath my bed
The disco ball is just hanging by a thread

Find 1 Example of Metaphor
"Your Love Is A Song" by Switchfoot
I hear you breathing in
Another day begins
The stars are falling out
My dreams are fading now, fading out
I've been keeping my eyes wide open
I've been keeping my eyes wide open
Your love is a symphony
All around me
Running through me
Your love is a melody
Underneath me
Running to me
Oh, your love is a song
The dawn is fire bright
Against the city lights
The clouds are glowing now
The moon is blacking out, is blacking out
So I've been keeping my mind wide open
I've been keeping my mind wide open, yeah

Find 1 Example of Onomatopoeia
Old Macdonald
Well, old Macdonald had a farm, ee-i-ee-i-o
And on his farm he had a cow, ee-i-ee-i-o
With a moo-moo here, and a moo-moo there
Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo-moo
Old Macdonald had a farm, ee-i-ee-i-o
Old Macdonald had a farm, ee-i-ee-i-o
And on his farm he had a goat, ee-i-ee-i-o
With a baa-baa here and a baa-baa there
Here a baa, there a baa, everywhere a baa-baa
Old Macdonald had a farm, ee-i-ee-i-o
Well, old Macdonald had a farm, ee-i-ee-i-o
And on his farm he had a chicken, ee-i-ee-i-o
With a cluck-cluck here, and a cluck-cluck there
Here a cluck, there a cluck, everywhere a cluck-cluck
Old Macdonald had a farm, ee-i-ee-i-o

Find 1 Example of Personification
Second Chance by Shinedown
My eyes are open wide
And by the way,
I made it through the day
I watched the world outside
By the way,
I'm leaving out today
I just saw Halley's comet
She waved
Said, "Why you always running in place?"
Even the man in the moon disappeared
Somewhere in the stratosphere
Tell my mother,
Tell my father
I've done the best I can
To make them realize
This is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying...
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Find 1 Example of Simile
"Like A Prayer" by Madonna
Life is a mystery,
Everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home
When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I want to take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer you know I'll take you there
I hear your voice, it's like an angel sighing
I have no choice, I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes, Oh God I think I'm falling
Out of the sky, I close my eyes
Heaven help me
Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like...
