Introduction
TheUtahStateOfficeofEducation(USOE)isadministeringtheCenturyLinkTeachersand
TechnologygrantsforthestateofUtah.Thisprogramwillawardatotalof$55,000.00to
supportpreK12grantsthatdemonstrateinnovativeusesoftechnologyintheclassroom.This
programisfundedbytheCenturyLinkClarkeM.WilliamsFoundation.
Thegrantspurposeistohelpsupport,attheclassroomlevel,thoseteachersintegrating
technologyintotheirdailycurriculumandtohelpexpandorenhancetheirstudents
learningexperiencesusingtechnology.Applicantsareencouragedtocreateinnovative
teachingandlearningprojectsandactivitiesthattakeadvantageoftoday'stechnologyand
resourcestoimproveteachingandlearning.Applicantsareencouragedtointegrate
technologyacrosssubjectareas,engagestudentsinprojectproducingeventswith
measurableresultsandpersuadeotherteachersandadministratorstofollowtheirexample.
AnyfulltimeclassroomteacherinaUtahpublicorprivateschoolinaCenturyLink
serviceareaiseligibletosubmitforagrantaward.(SeeeligibledistrictsinAppendix
A).Grantfundsmaybeusedtopurchasetechnologyand/orsuppliesandpayexpensesthat
supportprofessionaldevelopmentneeds.Grantfundsmaynotbeusedtopaysalariesorto
paystipends.
Fundsareawardedtotheteacherattheclassroomlevel.Allmaterialsandservicespurchased
withCenturyLinksfundsasaresultofthisawardarethepropertyoftheschooldistrict/
charterschool.

BenefitsofProjectBasedLearning
Thisfischertechnikconstructionsystemincorporatesaprojectbased
curriculumallowingfordeepexplorationofaproblem.Theprojectcanbedesigned
toallowdifferentstudentgroupstodevelopseveraldistinctsolutionstothesame
problem.Theproblempresentsthestudentwithanopportunitytoplan,organizeand
conductresearch.Enablingactivitieshelptoprovidestudentswithneededskillsand
knowledgejustintime.Studentsutilizetheirresearchinthedesign,prototyping,
testing,evaluation,andredesignofasolution.
Thetermengineeringimpliesamathematicalevaluationofadesign.This

TheImportanceofComplyingwithStandards
Trueprojectbasedcurriculumneedstobestandardsbased,utilizingseveral
standardsets.CommonCoreScienceStandardswillbeinplacethisyearasa
companiontotheexistingCommonCoreMathStandards.Thereisatemptationto
ignoretheLiteracyStandardsastheydonotappearintheSTEMdesignation.They
areasimportantastheCommonCoreMathStandards.ReadingandWriting
StandardsforLiteracyinHistory/SocialStudies,Science,andTechnicalSubjects
preparestudentsforfurthereducationandenteringintoemployment.
(5)ChangingandImprovingCurrentUseofTechnologyinmyClassroom
Myclassroomcurrentlyincorporatesmanyaspectsofcomputertechnology
asavailablethroughcomputersoftware.Imakeuseofeveryfreeavailable
educationalbitoftechnologythatIlearnaboutthroughfurtheringmyowntechnology
education.Animplementationofincreasedkinestheticusesoftechnologywould
enhancemystudentslearningexponentially.Ofcourse,thisiswherefunding
becomesaproblemandwherethisgrantplaysagiantrole.
AmajorbarriertosuccessfulpreparationforcareersinSTEMfieldsisthe
needforremediationbeforetruecollegeworkcanbegin.ProjectbasedSTEM
educationprovidesstudentswiththepreparationnecessaryforsuccessfulentryinto
collegeprograms.Studieshaveshowncollegestudentswhohaveparticipatedin
STEMprogramsinhighschoolearnhigherGPAs,havebetterretentionandare
betterpreparedfortherigorsofcollegestudy.1Whilemystudentsareinmiddle
school,thereiseveryreasontobelievethatapositive,constructiveexperiencewith
projectbasedSTEMeducationleadsmorestudentstoenrollinfurtherSTEM
classesinhighschoolandeventuallycollege.
