1. A block of stone is cut with a uniform thickness of 0.7 m in the shape shown
below. It rests on a simple support A at a distance of 0.15 m from the left hand
edge and on a roller support B at a distance x from the right hand side. The
density of the stone is 2200 kg/m3.
(a) Calculate x so that the vertical reactions at A and B are equal.
(b) The block will be lifted by a crane using a hook anchored at C. What
horizontal force needs to be applied at D to ensure that the block does not
rotate whilst being lifted.
