DAVID CAMERONS VETO IN DECEMBER 2011

Last December, David Cameron used a veto in an important European summit. In a treaty
which the European Union agreed, David Cameron didnt agree with that treaty and he
rejected it. The result was 26 countries of the 27 countries which compose the European Union
were in favor of the treaty while only one (Britain) didnt want to work with that treaty.
David Cameron defended that he never would accept something wrong for his Britain and he
considered that this treaty was not favorable for the British people. According to Cameron, the
treaty would have more disadvantages than advantages for the UK.
The treaty, I think, was about the single currency for all the European Union. As everybody
knows, the UK doesnt have the single currency. He says: Were not in the single currency,
and we dont want to be in the single currency. It is right for Britain to pursue her national
interest.
After that, there were many declarations in favor or against these words. For example, Carmel
Magri, from Malta, wrote that Cameron had done the correct thing being against this treaty
because she affirmed that the UK didnt need Europe as it needed many years ago. Also, a
French newspaper said that British people werent part of this big crisis and he absolved them
for the European responsibilities.
However, there were many and many opinions against David Cameron. For instance, the
German Elmar Brok affirmed that the European Union would be better without the UK. From
Italy, some declarations which said that there was an obstacle in the European Union and this
wasnt Germany. The principal obstacle was the UK. Moreover, it was said that the system
would be collapsed with the play of the UK that he explained that the UK always had a foot
inside and another out of the UK and that was not possible. Also, from Denmark, the economic
minister said that she agreed with the decision but it was not favorable for the European
Union because it could divide. She affirmed that everybody should remain together. It would
be better than anyone chose his own way to take decisions.
