This document contains the problems for Problem Set 1 that was due on February 6th for the Groups and Representations course in Spring 2012. The three problems are: (1) prove the Frobenius reciprocity theorem by constructing explicit maps in both directions; (2) decompose the space of complex-valued functions on the 2-sphere S2 into orthonormal spherical coordinate functions Yml using Frobenius reciprocity and what is known about SU(2) representations, finding explicit formulas for Ym1 and how SU(2) and SO(3) act on these functions; (3) prove that two functions on a compact Lie group G are orthogonal in L2(G) if one is a matrix

Problem 1: Prove the Frobenius reciprocity theorem
HomG (V, M apH (G, W )) = HomH (V, W ) by constructing explicitly maps in both directions. Problem 2: Decompose the space of complex -valued functions on S 2 into orthonormal functions Yml of spherical coordinates as described in class, using Frobenius reciprocity and what you know about SU (2) representations. Find explicit formulas for the Ym1 and show how SU (2) and SO(3) act on these functions. Problem 3: Given two distinct irreducible representations V1 and V2 of a compact Lie group G, prove that two functions on G are orthogonal in L2 (G) if one is a matrix element in the representation V1 , the other is a matrix element in the representation V2 .
