The document describes two demonstrations of osmosis. The first uses eggs placed in beakers of distilled water and a sucrose solution to show how osmosis causes water to diffuse into or out of the eggs. The second uses dialysis tubing filled with water or sucrose solution submerged in a cylinder of water to illustrate how a semipermeable membrane allows for diffusion based on solute concentration. Changes should be apparent within 24 hours for both demonstrations.

DEMONSTRATION One 1. Pour distilled water into one beaker and 2M sucrose into another. 2. Wearing rubber gloves pour conc HCl into a beaker containing an egg, leave until the egg dissolves. Gentle rubbing will aid removing the shell. note fumes evolved can be an irritant. 3. When the egg is de-shelled rinse with distilled water. 4. Place the egg into one of the beakers and repeat with other egg. 5. Noticeable changes should be apparent within 24 hours. Two 1.Fill one large measuring cylinder with distilled water. 2.Cut two lengths of dialysis tubing and Open it up, knot one end and fill one with water and one with 2M sucrose solution. Knot the other end. 3. Place into measuring cylinder. 4. leave for 24 hrs.
